Weather experts warn that low-lying areas in Miami could experience flooding this week owing to the king tide.

The yearly rate of high tide flooding is more than twice that from just 20 years ago because of sea level rise, but flooding fluctuates year to year.

Higher than normal tides thanks to the full moon, plus extra rain fall and northerly winds, could cause flooding in low lying areas.

King tides, unusually high tides occurring a few times a year, can exacerbate storm-driven flooding. The coastlines of Virginia and the Carolinas are currently experiencing this phenomenon, making storms during this period particularly damaging.
