Great Smoky Mountains National Park Changes Name Of Tallest Mountain From Confederate General To Cherokee Name

Great Smoky Mountains ditches name of Confederate general
The peak became known as Clingmans Dome following an 1859 survey by geographer Arnold Guyot, who named it for Thomas Lanier Clingman, a Confederate Brigadier General as well as a lawyer, US Representative and Senator from North Carolina, according to the park.
Clingmans Dome no more: Cherokee name for Great Smoky Mountains' highest peak restored
Kuwohi, which translates to “mulberry place” in Cherokee, replaces Clingmans Dome, a name that honored Thomas Clingman, an expelled U.S. senator-turned-Confederate brigadier general who, as a lawyer, defended settlers’ claims on Cherokee land. Clingman is buried in Riverside Cemetery in Asheville.
